 Order Order!!!

:) Gentlemen: Good winter ride today - well attended but what a shambles!

Riders like potholes - all over the road. Gaps in the lines, wheels overlapping, three (and four) abreast. People speeding up and slowing down suddenly. The kind of riders that good people think badly of and the kind of riders that get hurt and hurt others.

We have some new riders who need to learn the ropes and no-one is teaching them. Can we discuss who will call this to order, teach those who need taught, shout at those who need shouted at and get us moving better together? :(

John,

Thanks for sharing your observations. It is embarrassing to read such words being said. However, as an individual, I think this is a good opportunity to remind people of the ground rules for club runs, which have been defined in a document called the club etiquette. The club etiquette covers what is expected of riders on the road and deals with areas such as how many abreast to ride, changing speed, the highway code and so on. This is on the club web-site and can be found at the end of the following link

http://btckstorage.blob.core.windows.net/site2512/Etiquette.pdf

There is also a link on the Join page of the web-site. Everyone, please take this opportunity to read the document and remind yourself of what is being asked of you.

I understand that new riders are asked to read the etiquette document when they first come out with the the club and we do sign a membership form agreeing to abide by the club rules when subscribing to the club each year. If anyone has any views on adding to, or changing the etiquette, then I suggest that you feed this back to one of the committee.

For me, the above covers the expectations and is in a form that leaves little doubt as to what is expected. In terms of policing rider behaviour on the road, I believe that this is the responsibility of each and every member of the club. This can be done by shouting whilst on the move, or by a quite word when the opportunity occurs when not on the move. I would expect more experienced club members to take a particular interest in people who are just finding there feet with a few polite words where necessary, and to save the shouting for any errant old hacks.

The last time I rode with the club was round the coast on a frosty day, there were patches of ice on the road. Twice the rider in front of me snatched on the brakes when the front rider warned of the ice. I tried to warn of the perils of sudden brake use in icy conditions in my own subtle way which many of you will be familiar with but my advice fell on deaf ears. Maybe this advice coming from John (whos knowledge and experience far outweighs mine or anyone else I can think of for that matter) will be heeded.

I wasn't out on the ride last Saturday, not fit enough just now, but I was a bit dismayed to read your comments John. As one of the less confident riders in the group comments like that do nothing to inspire me, in fact if I was a prospective rider looking to join the club I think I might be put off if I had browsed the forum. I would hope than any rider in our group who was lacking a bit of experience, or group riding know how, would be open to a bit of friendly, emphasis on friendly, advice from someone with a bit more savvy, I know I certainly would be! You have a lot more experience, please feel free to share it, in the interests of club camaraderie. New riders can read about club etiquette until the cows come home, putting it into practice is slightly different.

smg - your reference to Romans 8 is too cryptic for me and it is a chapter that once in my life I knew off by heart. Are you saying that I am unable to condemn you because you are in Christ Jesus and walk not after the flesh (v1) or are you saying that you are above the law (verse 2) or that it is Christ who condemns and not johnny the Fish (v34). Or that nothing will separate you from the Dumfries chain-gang (v39)? Please enlighten this dark world!

Gillm: "we are saved by hope" (verse 24), Enough of Romans 8 (or was smg talking about there being 8 Romans somewhere?)

I think that I am being deliberately blunt to get a discussion going. I think that we need to think again about how we ride as a group and the need for a sense of order and predictability in the bunch. I agree that reading etiquette is not enough and that new riders need direction from more experienced riders on the road. The thing is that without club appointed stewards, there is some conflicting advice going round but mostly no advice at all because people don't want to be bossy. It might be that we need to appoint a couple of ride stewards so that people are empowered to give orders and to ensure that the advice is consistent. The race team will require more discipline on the road so that should improve things. Riding in a bunch is a skill to be learned as is riding in a chain gang.

If you are out tomorrow (get out and get into shape) you will see that I have returned to my usual pleasant self. ::)

Dear Fishy John,

My overwhelming feeling is one of great relief that you have regained your usual jovial personality :D

Of course your comments were going to spark a debate, that's why I replied!

I wholeheartedly agree that a couple of nominated ride stewards would be a good idea, no matter how hard we all try to ride well as a group there will always be lapses when gaps will open, wheels will overlap and brakes will be pulled on, I know I am always open to advice from those with much more experience than I have.
I plan to hang up my running shoes and get back on my (t)rusty steed very soon, hopefully I am not too badly out of shape, I look forward to riding with you then. 8-)
